A former police officer opened fire at a child-care center in northeast Thailand, killing more than 30 people, including 22 children, police said.

The gunman, who police identified as 34-year-old Panya Kamrab, later killed himself and his wife and child, police said. He was fired from the police force after being arrested with methamphetamine on him, police said.

The mass shooting occurred in the Nong Bua Lamphu province Thursday afternoon local time, according to police. At least 15 people were also wounded, eight of whom are in critical condition, police said.

Mass shootings are uncommon in Thailand. In 2020, a soldier killed at least 29 people and holed himself up in a shopping mall before being shot dead by security forces.

Authorities guard the gate of the child-care center in Thailand’s Nong Bua Lamphu province.
